I've visited Gaugemaster a few times living only in Portsmouth, mostly when my son was younger and really into railways. I always found the staff quite distant and not particularly engaging with a youngster. All rather stuffy. This is a great shame when you consider that the youngsters are the future of modelling. The selection is phenomenal and although a bit on the expensive side the range is something to behold. Parking is good but there's no toilets for a shop of this size?? All in all, a good shop but spoilt by the less than engaging staff. [Response: "Thank you for your comments about our range. We list over 50 thousand products and have over 20 thousand different products in stock. We always try to encourage children to take part in the hobby, especially at our many event days over the year, but we will take on-board your comments. As we are a distributor for many continental ranges we don't like to undercut our trade customers, but we are extremely competitive on UK brands such as Hornby and Bachmann. Regarding toilets, like many out-of-town retailers we do not have customer toilets which does cause us embarrassment when saying no to customers. There are insurance, safety, and security issues and although we do try to exercise common sense, we are unable to allow customers to use the staff facilities."]

The best range of ready to run models in the country but also the most expensive. Would recommend comparing prices with other shops before committing to a purchase. [Response: "We try to offer a premium experience by offering the widest selection of products in a high quality environment. Commercial factors dictate that we cannot be the cheapest in the country but equally we not always the most expensive either. We are pleased you consider us to have the best range of ready to run models in the country and look forward to welcoming you to our store again soon."]

This is a large well-stocked model shop who manage to hold a large number of ranges not often found it such quantities at other model shops.
However, being a large very well-stocked shop many will travel considerable distances to get there. only to find there isn't a WC available to customers (even my local model shop has this facility). The customer in-need is directed to the adjacent station only to find their WC locked. Back in the shop this is often followed by a enforced reduced browsing experience.
Unfortunately (and from the experience of several visits) the staff can be somewhat indifferent which doesn't endear one to return unless absolutely necessary. Not impolite but the minimum to assist.
However, on the positive side it's relative ease of access by car (or rail) must be acknowledged.

Large shop with huge stock (they are main importers for several continental ranges). Very helpful staff who will advise on your requirements and get anything you ask for out of the store. I always find something that I hadn't even realized I needed until I saw it. Also, their mail order service is very efficient.
Parking on site. Easy to reach by train as right next door to Ford station.
